THREE PEOPLE HAVE DIED ON ROAD AMBUSH ALONG JUBA-TORIT ROAD ON SATURDAY
Torit, 28 February 2026 — Three people were killed on Saturday afternoon following an ambush by unidentified armed men along the Juba–Torit road, eyewitnesses reported.
According to witnesses, the attackers opened fire on a passenger vehicle traveling from Juba to Torit at approximately 3:00 p.m. local time. The gunmen reportedly sprayed the vehicle with bullets, killing three occupants instantly. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the victims.
The Juba–Torit road is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous transport routes in the country, frequently targeted by armed groups. Travelers along the highway have repeatedly reported incidents of robbery and violent attacks, with assailants stealing money, mobile phones, and other valuable belongings.
Local authorities in Eastern Equatoria State had not yet deployed security forces to the scene at the time of reporting.
Since the outbreak of conflict in the country, incidents of roadside ambushes have increased significantly. Analysts and residents say armed banditry has flourished amid weakened law enforcement, with some robberies allegedly involving members of state security forces who have gone years without receiving salaries.
