AT LEAST THREE YOUNG MEN WERE KILLED BY DINKA HERDERS IN MUGALI

At least a youthful man from native Madi from Mugali Payam, Magwi County Eastern Equatoria state was on Tuesday found dead. Family and relatives identified him as Joseph Andruga. 

The late whose body was found in the Aswa River was abducted with eleven other young men from their village in Mugali by armed Dinka Bor cattle herders. 

 

South Sudan Liberty News understands from a source who declined to be named due to fear of his life said on Tuesday twelve Ma'di youth were rounded up at gunpoint by men dressed in SSPDF and in Plain civilian clothes, who arbitrarily arrested these young men in commando style and took them to an unknown location. After pressures from the community leaders, 9 of the young men were released however, three were taken by the armed herders and they are presumed to have been shot dead and their bodies were thrown into Aswa River.  

 

By late afternoon on Tuesday, the local community launched the search for the bodies have retrieved one body that was identified by relatives as Joseph Andruga, however, the other two missing boys were not found. 

 

For weeks since the unknown cattle raiders stormed Jeleyi cattle camps in the outcast of Nimule in which four herders were said to have been killed and about five hundred cows raided, the heartless and heavily armed cattle herders have turned their anger to the local community in Mugali.  

 

Eyewitnesses who spoke to SSLN revealed that in some cases the herders harassed the local community, looted food items, and gang-raped girls who are as young as eight years old. 

" Our community from Mugali has been going through a series of harassment, intimidation, looting of food items, and many of our people fled to Nimule in search of safety from Dinka," said one elderly man. 

 

Yesterday (Wednesday two military pick-up land cruisers believed to have belonged to National Security Services headed to Melijo in Mugali, the locals who spoke to this publication confirmed to have spotted the local notorious commander Lt Col Atem Mading of NSS who has been linked to several atrocities in Madi- Acholi land including the arrest of South Sudan National Minister of Mining Hon. Martin Gama Abucha, and many others including the disappearance of chief intelligence officer of Anyanya brigade from Aswa cantonment site, col Ojja Julius since October 2021. Lt Col Atam Mading recently threatened the life of Magwi County Commissioner. 

 

Per a top informant in the government, the mission of Lt Col Atem Mading to Melijo is to supply ammunition and guns to Dinka Bor cattle herders who since 2011 forcefully occupied the area and have refused to return to their ancestral land.
