Nimule, 10 April 2021; the South Sudan People's Defense Force (SSPDF) deployed huge army forces in Nimule small border town. The deployment started before the arrival of South Sudan's minister of defense Angelina Teny and army chief Gen. Johnson Juma Okot aka JJ. Okot, and other senior military officers. Some senior army officers and politicians from neighboring Uganda also came to Nimule to attend a meeting with their South Sudanese counterparts, which lasted the whole. The show of military force came a few days after some Ugandan truck drivers and their trucks were burned into ashes, by unknown gunmen along Nimule-Juba highway. The incident sparked demonstrations by Ugandan drivers and traders in the Ugandan border town of Elegu, with the drivers calling for their protection.
It is not clear what the senior government officials discussed, but it is assumed their main talks revolved around the protection of Nimule-Juba road. The meeting lasted the whole workday, before the chopper which brought minister Teny lifted off, taking the VIP passengers back to Juba. No public statement has been by the government regarding the event in Nimule.
The high-level security meeting involving senior defense and military officers came after a spate of the violent attack on traders and their trucks along Juba-Nimule and Juba-Yei roads in which a total of ten civilians were said to have lost their lives.
