SSPDF and NAS clashed at Aru-Junction along Juba-Nimule Highway

Aru-Junction, 19 July 2020: Clashes between South Sudan People's Defense Forces and National Salvation Front [NAS] led by rebel leader Gen Thomas Cirilo Swaka has displaced thousands in Lokiria County situated along Juba-Nimule highway Central Equatoria State. 

According to the Episcopal Church of South Sudan province Archbishop of Central Equatoria state, Rt Rev Archbishop Paulo Pitia Benjamín Yugusuk.  The displaced persons have since Thursday camp at Tiginli at Aru-junction a long Juba-Nimule highway. 

Archbishop Paulo said the deadly confrontation between SSPDF and NAS started on Thursday and it continues throughout Saturday as a result, thousands of civilians mainly women, children, and elderly persons have sought refuge at Tiginli primary school and they are in urgent need of basic humanitarian assistance. 

A civilian source in the area told this publication that the citizens from TiginliLangabu have experienced constant harassment from the NAS rebel who came into the areas looking for food by force, so on Thursday the concerned citizens who were tired with the constant intimidation by NAS rebel reported the presence of NAS to SSPDF barrack at Aru-Junction and the barrack commander response immediately resulting into three days clashes. 

At the time of filing this report it is still unclear whether the rebel group has withdrawn from the area, and official it is still unclear whether there are causalities from both sides. 

This publication has sought confirmation from NAS spokesperson Samuel Suba but he didn't respond to our written request.
