SOUTH SUDAN HAS BEEN EXPELLED FROM AU DUE TO ACCUMULATING UNPAID DEBTS

Juba, 19 June 2020; South Sudan has been expelled and suspended from the African Union due to accumulating unpaid debt to the organization, the outstanding debts are membership regular fee, African Union Peace Fund.  

According to the document seen by this publication South Sudan troublesome world youngest nation owns African Union U$ 9.191.234.04 million. 

The letter addressed by South Sudan ambassador who doubled as permanent Mission to AU, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ambassador James Pitia Morgan, to the undersecretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Headquarters in Juba, South Sudan. 

" The Mission of the Republic of South Sudan to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and permanent Mission to the African Union and UNECA has the honor to transmit the attached documents being the decision on Sanctions," partly read the letter. 

The Mission would like to inform your esteemed offices that our country, South Sudan has been sanctioned due to lack of payment of its contribution to African Union; AU Budget and peace fund" said amb. Morgan. 

"Today, we were barred from participating in AU meeting of yesterday 16 June 2020" stated Ambassador Morgan. 

South Sudan's head of Mission, Ambassador Morgan said, it was a dramatic and embarrassing scene when the chairperson of the meeting stopped the proceedings to inform South Sudanese diplomats that their participation was illegal, as the Republic of South Sudan has been sanctioned following the consecutive three years of none payment, according to the letter. 

The letter detailed indicates South Sudan owned U$ 4.774.614.00 million for the African Union Peace Fund in 2019, other 1.249.632.00 Regular Budget for 2019, and other staggering amounts of U$ 2.622.712.00 Regular Budget 2020, and finally another U$544.275.00 for Peace Fund 2020. 

Last year South Sudan was suspended from the trade body of East African Communities due to lack of payment of membership fee, perhaps the next organization to suspend or expel South Sudan is Intergovernmental Authorities on Development. /IGAD
