Juba, 18 May 2020: South Sudan's Covid-19 task force said the chairman of its committee Dr. Riek Machar has tested positive as the country's total number of infections rises to 290, this was confirmed by the country's coronavirus task force today (Monday) evening. Dr. Riek Machar, his wife, and several of his office staff and bodyguards are among the latest victims whose results came back positive.
"First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, who heads the COVID-19 task force in the country and his wife Angelina Teny the defense Minister have both tested positive with coronavirus," said James Gatdet in a written statement seen by SSLN
Another close aid to the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, told this publication from capital Juba that both Dr. Machar and his wife Madam Angelina Teny, are in good health and stable though they tested positive, he, however, said both Machar and Angelina have not shown symptoms of COVID-19.
He also told this reporter that several of Machar's office staff and bodyguards have tested positive as well with the Covid-19 virus.
Wednesday last week as the number of infections surges, the task force committee decided to enroll mandatory test for all its members, Dr. Machar and Madam Angelina were among an unspecified number of the people tested last week, unfortunately, the result came out positive.
Several other high-level task forces tested positive too, the source who spoke to this publication in the condition of anonymity said Dr. Machar first took a test on 27 April 2020, during which the result came back negative.
This evening before filing this report, the country officially confirmed death toll stands five (5) death, four (4) recovered and 290 confirmed cases.
The close aid of the vice first President said from today onwards Dr. Machar and Madam Angelina will self-quarantine in their residence for the next 14 days and after 14 days they will undergo another test to determine their faith.
James Gatdet Dak, Machar's press secretary said, Machar is in good health and he encouraged members of the public to do testing to enable them to know their status.

In a related development, Ugandan truck drivers have tested positive too as they left South Sudan and tested from the Ugandan side of Elegu town.
In the past few days, several senior military generals within the South Sudan People's Defense Forces were said to have died with coronavirus though this cannot be independently verified.
