SPLA-IO LEADER DR RIEK MACHAR HAS BEEN FREED BY IGAD FROM ILLEGAL HOUSE ARREST

Khartoum, 2 December 2019: South Sudan's main rebel leader, Dr. Riek Machar has finally been set free from his Dumbfounding confinement in Khartoum.  

According to the Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who is IGAD's new Chairman, the decision to free Machar from his long confinement has been reached in IGAD heads of states summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 

"Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon is finally free," said Abdalla Hamdok, the Sudanese Prime Minister who assumed the chairmanship of the East African bloc of IGAD from his Ethiopian counterpart. 

" Dr. Riek Machar deserves freedom, he is the main opposition leader and without him there would be no peace in South Sudan," said Abdalla Hamdok. 

" Regardless of disagreement in IGAD Council of leaders, Dr. Riek deserves to be set free and contribute to the process and progress of peace in the Republic of South Sudan, " he added. 

" Those who want to celebrate should start celebrating it, it's time to put politics aside, people of South Sudan have died, we want all the parties to the peace agreement to contribute to it without restrictions," said Abdalla Hamdok. 

 

Members of Riek's opposition group welcomed the decision taken by IGAD and thanked the new Sudanese leader for taking a brave and just  decision, the group further said this is what they have been calling for. We have been calling for the release of our chairman Dr. Machar's who has been under house arrest since 2016 in the South Africa and then in Khartoum. 

The Opposition further stressed that it is Dr Machar's basic human frights to freely  move across the country which in turn will boost and energized the peace effort.
