Juba, 14 September 2019: South Sudan Opposition Alliance comprises of different opposition parties have elected a new leadership of the alliance. According to the press release to the public after the election a copy seen by this reporter, the election was conducted in a free and fair environment.
"Pursuant to Article 12 of the Charter of SSOA and in accordance with Chapter 3 of the Election Rules and Procedures, the election committee presided the nomination and election of the leadership council of the alliance on 14th September 2019, at 10:55 AM at World Focus International Hotel, " Partly read the statement.
The statement further says the elections were conducted through a democratic and transparent manner in the presence of international observers, such as IGAD, AU, EU, UNMISS, TROIKA, as well as civil society and the media.
The alliance elected Hon Josephine Lagu to the position of chairperson, ending the long tenure of Gabriel Changson. Josephine Lagu is a member of People's Democratic Movement founded by Dr. Hakim Darious who now heads a new alliance called Nadafa.
While Hon Hussein Abdel Bagi, got away with the post of deputy chairperson of the SSOA, other elected new members include General Khalid Butrous from breakaway NAS, he was elected in the post of finance, Dr. Lam Akol as Secretary-General. Dr. Akol is the leader of National Democratic Movement/ NDM. Meanwhile, General Bapiny Monytuil according to the statement was elected in the office of security coordinator, and former Western Equatoria state, Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro who is the founding leader of South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC) has taken external Relations.
SSOA has split after the leadership dispute between late general Peter Gatdet Dak and Gabriel Changson, the split came after this deputed election of the leadership of SSOA which late Gatdet claimed he has won, while Mr. Changson refused to relinquish power and step down, he claimed the election of Gatdet lacked a quorum.
