Nairobi, 10 July 2019: A prominent South Sudanese scholar Leonzio Angelo Onek has died, Onek who is a Ph.D. holder was a lecturer at Juba University. Onek according to his relative died from Nairobi, Kenya this morning (Wednesday 10 July 2019) however, his relative who spoke to SSLN couldn't disclose the exact illness which costs his life.
Meanwhile, Pierino Nathaniel Oyet, SPLA-IO governor for Torit state wrote on his Facebook page, " I am very saddened and sorrowful by the untimely death of Prof. Leonzio Onek who passed away this morning in Kenya. Your death professor is a great loss to the Acholi community as a whole. You have left a big gap in our midst. My heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, and friends. I pray that the lord rests your soul in eternal life"
In 2015, Prof. Leonzio Angole Onek was arrested in Juba, nation's capital and taken to the National Security Service (NSS) headquarters in the Jebel neighborhood, he was interrogated for several days and denied legal presentation, his family was denied access to visit him while in the detention.
