Nasir, 27 March 2019: A boat carrying a group of South Sudan's lawmakers was on Tuesday attacked by unidentified armed men. A total of eight MPs from Latjor State went for a meeting with members of SPLA-IO in Mandeang area for dissemination of peace.

Report coming from the military source indicates shortly after the MPs have left Mandeang on their way back to Nasir town, their boat came under intense attack from unidentified armed men in Birjok village.

The attack on the boat killed one of national legislators identified as Deng Bol Jak, one SPLA-IO officer identified as Deng Bol Chopthiang, the bodyguard of the Deng Bol Jak, and government security officer identified as Duop Wiyual Kang, while the unidentified captain of the boat sustained injury.

No group has claimed responsibility, however, on Wednesday deputy SPLA-IO military spokesperson Col Lam Paul Gabriel released statement said SPLA-IO has distanced itself and condemned the attack and blamed it on criminals which he said must be apprehended and brought to face justice, Lam urges CTSAMM, UNMISS, and JDB should investigate the incident.

"The SPLA IO would like to distance itself from the incident that happened in Mandeng yesterday the 26/03/2019 where a boat carrying peace delegation from Mandeng to Nasir was waylaid and a Member of Parliament got killed including security personnel from the SPLA IO. The boat captain and other security personnel were also injured in the attack" partly read the statement issued by Col Lam Paul.

Col Lam further says the attack was an act of criminals, "This is an act done by criminals who don’t value the importance of peace. The SPLA IO security team is working hard to pursue and apprehend these two criminals and bring them to justice" he added.

"The leadership of the SPLA- IO regrets the loss of the Hon. MP and the security personnel who were disseminating peace to the civilians in Mandeng. For the injured, we wish them a quick recovery" the statement further reads in part.

The SPLA -IO calls upon the CTSAMM, UNMISS, and JDB to investigate this criminal act and bring the peace spoilers to book.
