Pageri, 15 February 2019; Government and armed SPLA-IO opposition forces have finally met in Pageri on Thursday 14 February 2019, to harmonize relationship and offer free movement of civilians along the life-saving lifeline Juba-Nimule highway. The region has been very volatile since 2016, the long-awaited meeting between the two former antagonistic enemies was first scheduled to take place on 12 January, however, due to logistics issue it was postponed.
The joint meeting brought together the most senior military from both sides, ranging from the ranks of col to Maj Generals. while addressing the forces, the Torit state governor Alberio Tobiolo Oromo said, “ from today you are one force, one national army of the Republic of South Sudan and there should not be any more fighting among you”.
The meeting brought civilian representatives as well as church leaders who came from Uganda and other parts of the country, among the delegates were UNMISS, R-JEMC.
The handshakes between the senior commanders from both sides were marked with colorful traditional dance by Madi native women group who came from Uganda, Juba, Torit, and Nimule.
