Leer, 28 June 2017:Government forces clashed with militia group of former Chief of staff Paul Malong Awan, in Leer and Mayendit, Unity State. Mathiang Anyoor is the brutal militia group recruited by Paul Malong from his home state Northern Bahr el Ghazal. The group was recruited with solid objective to rescue and protect President Kiir in well calculated event of December 2013.
Since 2013, massacred the same group has been accused of committing gross atrocities including rapes, torching of houses of civilians in non Dinka areas including massacre of civilians in Yei and Wunduruba, Central Equatoria state and recent massacre of civilians in Pajok.
The clashes between the former allies forces was kept in absolute secrecy, relations between supporters of Paul Malong and Kiir have taken the worse turn since President Kiir sacked Paul Malong from the top military job.
Deputy spokesperson of SPLA-IO, Col Lam Paul Gabriel on Wednesday issued statement in which he said " About three days ago, Salva Kiir's loyal forces launched a campaign against Mathiang Anyor in Leer and Mayendit counties, Unity state by attacking them [ Mathiang Anyoor] as they planned to desert their positions and head back to Aweil".read the statement issued by Lam Gabriel.
"This unnecessary and useless fight against the Mathiang anyoor has resulted to several death and several others wounded from both sides" he said.
Lam further reiterated the call by their commander in chief of SPLA-IO, Dr Riek Machar to allow safe passage or exit for Mathiang Anyoor forces who are returning to their home state. " The SPLA- IO forces are being directed to continue giving safe passage to these Mathiang Anyor as ordered by the Commander In Chief, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon early this month" the statement further read.
In related violence between Kiir's forces and Mathiang Anyoor, Lam praised the SPLA-IO nominated commissioner and some officials in rebel control areas for opening upa corridor to receive displaced persons from Eastern Lake state. "Secondly, there is an influx of displaced people from Eastern Lake state and Rumbek into Panyijar county. The county Commissioner Gen. John Tap Poat has warmly received and offered protection to these displaced people. This is a clear sign that the SPLM/A IO is not a tribal movement but rather a national liberation movement that carters for everybody in South Sudan regardless of religion, tribe, race or nationality"
The commissioner of Panyijar county, Gen. John Tap Poat is calling upon humanitarian agencies to rush into the county to provide necessary services to these new Internally Displaced People.
