SPLA-IO DENIES INVOLVEMENT TO THE AMBUSH WHICH KILLED BANGLADESHI UN PEACE KEEPER IN YEI

Yei, 27 June 2018; SPLA-IO on Wednesday issued a strong statement distancing itself from the armed attack on UNMISS convoy along Yei-Lasu road on Tuesday, which caused the life of Bangladeshi peacekeeper. Military Liaison Officer, Lieutenant Commander Ashraf Siddiqui was shot by unidentified armed men and later died from the gunshot. 

The SPLA-IO group's deputy military spokesperson, Col Lam Paul Gabriel on Wednesday's press release says, "The SPLA IO would like to make its position clear on the incident that happened on 26/06/2018 along Yei- Lasu road where a Bangladeshi Military Liaison Officer, Lieutenant Commander Ashraf Siddiqui was shot and later died of gunshot wound" 

Lam says SPLA-IO has a clear policy of safe passages to UNMISS escorts through-out its areas of control, "The SPLA-IO has not only given safe passages to UNMISS escorts through its areas of control but also given UNMISS unhindered access to perform their required duties" 

Lam says, " As a movement, the SPLA-IO doesn’t have a policy of attacking UNMISS or civilian’s convoys no matter the situation" 

The armed opposition through the office of its deputy military spokesperson has extended a message of condolences to UNMISS and the family of the deceased, " We extend our sincere condolences to UNMISS and the family of the demise" the letter partly read. 

Col Lam pledges more support to CTSAMM to investigate the incident, "The SPLA-IO calls upon the CTSAMM to go into the area and investigate the incident. Our commanders on the ground will be available for assistance during this investigation"
