GOV'T AND OPPOSITION FORCES CLASHED IN FASHODA STATE IN UPPER NILE

Pagak, 7 June 2018; Fighting is not subsiding despite the fact the warring parties have committed themselves to silence their guns. In the latest resumption of fighting in Upper Nile regions, both sides have traded accusation for scaling up the fight which displaced thousands without access to food and medicines.

Thursday morning the deputy military spokesperson of SPLA-IO step up his accusation towards Juba regime for attacking the base of SPLA-IO.  Col Lam Paul said on 6 June 2018 in the afternoon hours, the regime’s forces launched a surprise attack against the SPLA-IO Sector 1 HQ in Ardeb, in Fashoda State killing four soldiers.

They came from Dafa (Kaka) and Thorguang a distance of more than one-hour drive which shows how prepared they were. He, however, said the Agwelek [Shilluk fighters] under the renege Lt general Johnson Oling, quickly reorganized and repulsed the aggressors with a crushing defeat.

“This continuous act of cowardice from the regime is happening while IGAD is organizing a face to face talks between Dr. Machar and Salva Kiir. It is, therefore, a clear indication that the regime is against any chance of achieving peace in South Sudan” said Col Lam Paul.

Col Lam Paul further accused Juba regime of spreading defamatory social media lies against SPLA-IO, Lt general Gabriel Duop Lam for leading a force to attack government forces in Kaka.

“It should be noted that the regime on Sunday 03/06/2018, made a hostile propaganda on social media against the SPLA IO DCoG for Operations (Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam) that he was leading a force to attack the regime’s position of Kaka. This was a baseless accusation meant to justify the attack in Ardeb and amounts to violations by itself”

“The SPLA-IO as usual calls upon the CTSAMM and UNMISS to urgently investigate these violations and bring those responsible to book”.

Col Lam said all the SPLA-IO forces have been directed to be on high alert in self-defense should their bases come under attacks. “ The SPLA-IO forces are hereby directed to continue to be on high alert as they maintain their defensive positions amidst these violations from the regime”
