Addis Ababa, 30 May 2018: South Sudan's President Salva Kiir arrived in Ethiopia on Wednesday afternoon amid growing pressure from international and regional power to impose punitive measure against the Peace spoilers.
Mr. Kiir is expected to meet his counterpart, the Ethiopian Prime Minister before attempting the meeting of IGAD Council of Ministers on Thursday. IGAD council of Minister is called on the same day the UN security council is meeting in New York to impose a travel ban and asset freezing sanctions on six South Sudanese peace spoilers, including the country's Defense Minister Kuol Manyang Juuk and cabinet affairs minister Martin Elia Lomoru.
Sudan's leader is later scheduled to meet his Ethiopian counterpart Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for talks on peace in the country.
Ethiopia is current chair of the regional bloc, of Inter-Governmental Authority on Development [IGAD].
According to insider sources from Kiir's camp, Mr. Kiir is expected to ask Prime Minister Abiy to lobby African leaders against what he termed as the US agenda of regime change in South Sudan.
Inside source further said Kiir is also expected to lobby Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy who is also the chair of the regional bloc of IGAD not to impose any punitive measure against Juba. The source further said Kiir also expected to present to Prime Minister Abiy his version of National Dialogue as the best means to reconcile all the South Sudanese not sanctions as an outside solution than the home breed National Dialogue which according to Kiir is the best vehicle for peace in war torn South Sudan.
On arrival President Kiir was welcomed in Addis Ababa by Ethiopian Foreign minister Workeneh Gebeyehu.
Kiir was accompanied by his chief negotiator Nhial Deng Nhial, several senior ministers amd senior official of military.
