Nairobi, 14 May 2018; South Sudan former SPLA army chief of staff, General Paul Malong Awan, who is now leading new rebel group calling itself the South Sudan United Movement fighting to oust his former boss President Salva Kiir, General Malong accused his former boss President Kiir for ethnic cleansing, and gross violation of human rights along Madi corridor. General Malong admitted to VOA news last Friday while he was speaking from Kenyan capital Nairobi. That all the killings and mass displacement along Juba-Nimule road were ordered by President Kiir.
During the interview with VOA news General Malong flatly rejected the accusation against by Information Minister Michael Makuei, who said that General Malong is responsible for gross violation of human rights, genocide, and other forms of degrading crimes committed by the government army throughout the war.
Malong categorically rejected that he was responsible for atrocities committed against civilians in the world youngest nation. General Paul Malong stated as general chief of staff, he was simply implementing orders from the commander in chief who is the President. He added that he bears no responsibility in atrocities which occurred from July 2016. He rather claimed it was the President who gave him orders; therefore, he was just implementing order from commander in chief.
Those orders according to Paul Malong including the order to capture or kill rebel leader Riek Machar after July 2016 incident of J1. He also said atrocities committed by SPLA army in Unity and Upper Nile states were all ordered by Kiir.
Malong further denied the alleged report of looting and torching of civilians' houses in Madi corridor. He said he never ordered the killing and looting of civilians' properties, " when two elephants are fighting grass suffers" said Malong, while referring to the fighting along Juba-Nimule road.
Malong who is under United states sanction said he himself is a victim of Kiir's war by pronouncing him a rebel before he rebelled against the government of Kiir. General Paul Malong called Information Minister Michael Makuei "a big liar", he said Mr. Makuei is information minister as such, he doesn't know what sort of command the commander in chief gives to general chief of staff to implement. He further stated that Michael Makuei has no knowledge than reporting what he is told to say. " he Makuei is a big liar, who has no knowledge about the orders given by the commander in chief to General chief of staff"
Malong's innocence self-proclaimed is to gain sympathy and attention from South Sudanese and international community. He simply trying to make himself innocent to brand himself new names, however, record shows in fact he was the master planner behind the recruitment of 15.000 strong militiamen from his Dinka ethnic tribe, his 15.000 militiamen were used against the Nuer in 2013 massacres.
Record also indicated that as chief of staff he recruited more militia who fought along SPLA regular forces in Western Equatoria, Central Equatoria and Western Bahr el Ghazal states.
