FIGHTING RESUMED ON SATURDAY IN MOST PARTS OF UPPER NILE

Pagak, May 2018; Intense fighting resumed this morning in most parts of Upper Nile, in which opposition forces have claimed to have at least killed more 80 government forces. According to pressure statement issued by SPLA-IO military spokesperson brig Gen William Gatjiath Deng, he stated that at least 95 percent of former opposition stronghold headquarters of Pagak were recaptured by opposition forces from the government forces in the past days.

Brig William stated in the press statement seen by SSLN, that at around 5:45am this morning [Saturday] and in an act of self-defense, the gallant and brave SPLA (IO) forces responded to the Juba regime attack on its positions in Turow, Nguankei and Pinythoor.
He said this has resulted into the defeat of government forces in several fronts, " as a result we pursued the Juba regime aggression into Pagak, 95 per cent of which is now under our full and complete control, including Jokow Bridge in the south, Way Station in the West, Nguankei in the East and Pinythoor in the north. With more than 54 of them killed, the Juba regime forces are now being confined in Pagak military garrison, as the gallant SPLA (IO) forces continue pursuing them" he added.

He said further fighting erupted at Ayod this morning in which government forces were Equally being defeated by gallant SPLA (IO) forces under the command of Cdr Major General Diang Deng. He further said the attackers were repulsed and pursued outside the town and towards four different directions, Gaap, Waai, Korwai and Jaakyom outside Ayod town.

Brig general Gatjiath accused the regime's forces for killing one and injuring two innocent civilians in unguided shelling in civilian populated areas. "In their (Juba regime) reckless shelling on and towards the surrounding civilian population around Waai airstrip, one innocent girl was killed, while two others, a boy and a girl, were seriously injured."

Brig general William Deng further added other government forces launched coordinated attack at Mayom. He said fighting started at 9:00am this morning [Saturday] in Mayom, "the same Juba regime forces moved out of Mawiij west of Waak and attacked SPLA (IO) positions in the area. Forces under Cdr. Major General Tito Biel Wieh responded more excessively to the regime’s forces and ensued, the gallant SPLA (IO) forces killed 27 Juba regime soldiers on spot, and the remaining disintegrated in disarray"
