Juba, 2 May 2018: South Sudan's President Kiir as expected has this evening promoted the acting army chief, General Gabriel Jok Riak from Lt General and made him his new general chief of Defense force ending the long awaiting stipulation as who will succeed the falling late Lt General James Ajongo Mawut who had been on the job less than a year.
Lt General Gabriel Jok Riak returned home yesterday after been away for emergency treatment from Kenyan capital Nairobi. The new chief of Defense force falls ill after attending the funeral of his former boss Lt General James Ajongo who died from Ethiopian capital Cairo barely two weeks ago.
Lt general Gabriel Jok Riak was diagnosed with stomach ulcer and has ever since being discharged and he is said to be in healthier state to assume the duty of the defense force.
The news of Riak's promotion was read on state owned SSBC the only TV channel in the country. It is not clear whether Jok will carry on with the reform within the army proposed by his predecessor late Lt General James Agongo who inherited the tribal army from the by then SPLA chief of staff who now turned rebel leader General Paul Malong Awan.
