GOV'T FORCES HAVE INTENSIFIED ATTACKS ON OPPOSITION BASES DESPITE DECLARING CEASE FIRES

28 December 2017; Despite the warring parties in South Sudan have all declared and ordered their forces to cease hostilities, they should remain in their bases to give peace chance. on Thursday the armed opposition forces loyal to oust former vice President Dr. Riek Machar has accused the government forces of intensifying further attacks on the bases of SPLA-IO, this came just hours after chief of defense force of SPLA. Lt Gen James Ajonga and President Kiir have both reiterated their commitment to the signed Cessation of hostilities and have stressed their forces are observing the cease fire. 

“As you may have heard the cessation of hostilities agreement which the government and the opposition have signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the president responding to development gave out the orders and instructions to me to start implementation of the ceasefire. Came into effect on Sunday and it will remain effective until other development comes" Gen James Ajonga told the soldiers in Aweil. 

While press statement issued by Deputy spokesperson of SPLA-IO, Col Lam Paul accused and directly pinned the government of intensifying and accelerating further attacks in different bases of SPLA-IO to gain more territory. 

"On 26/12/2017 at about 13:00hrs, the Juba regime forces launched another attack on SPLA- IO position in Bieh Payam in Koch County. They burnt down the base and its surrounding villages including food stores of both local produces and WFP provided donations to the suffering civilians of Koch county". stressed Lam in the statement extended to SSLN. 

According to Col Lam further attack took place on Wednesday. "Yesterday the 27/12/2017 they also burnt Guol, Koatpadaang and Kuleer Villages in addition to the above-mentioned areas". 

He added that, "this morning the 28/12/3017, then regime dispatched more than 300 soldiers from Mundri to go to attack our bases in Bari, Madewu, Ladingwa and Bangalo again. A part of the team went to Gori Balawu in Mundri West county an area controlled by the SPLA/M- IO. They are now looting food items and burning houses after civilians have escaped into the bushes". 

"This acts of aggression and provocation is expected to continue throughout till February/2018 when the HLRF reconvenes as the government aims at expanding their areas of control. The IGAD, TROIKA and the UN should take note of this intentional violation. The SPLA IO will in their current locations and only act on self-defense as ordered by the Commander in Chief, Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon" concluded the statement.
